Meet Dr Herd

Pediatrician
​

Edwin P. Herd, MD is a pediatrician with a warm, compassionate nature. Serving children of all ages in the Kailua-Kona area of Hawaii, Dr. Herd is honored to play a role in helping families reach and maintain optimal health. 

​

Education has always been an important part of Dr. Herd’s life. He began his studies at the University of South Carolina, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in engineering. He went on to complete his medical degree at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. From there, he further refined his skills through an internship and residency in pediatrics at the University of Colorado Denver. 

​

Dr. Herd is also proud of his military service. As a Captain in the United States Air Force, Dr. Herd served in the department of pediatrics at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, Nevada. Upon his honorable discharge from the Air Force, Dr. Herd worked in pediatric critical care in Colorado, North Carolina, South Dakota, and Las Vegas.

In 2007, Dr. Herd settled in West Hawaii and has built a thriving pediatric practice in the area. He was appointed Chief of Staff at Kona Community Hospital and served on multiple committees within that organization. He holds board certification through both the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Pediatrics. 

​

Among Dr. Herd’s professional interests are preventive care for children, pediatric infectious disease, pediatric critical care, and children's behavior issues including autism. Delivering medical care to children in need is a deeply rewarding part of his professional life. Dr. Herd also focuses on sports medicine and helps youth athletes recover from sports injuries and perform at their peak levels.

Dr. Herd is passionate about living a full and active life. He’s a loving husband, a father of three adult children, and a grandparent of six. He’s finished the Ironman Triathlon World Championship five times, and he was a triathlon coach for two decades. He also plays the guitar, the harmonica and sings at church as well as in a local blues/rock band.
